Guatemala Acatenango Finca La Laguneta
Making new discoveries in well-known coffee regions like Antigua is not easy to do. But good supply partners like San Miguel Coffee, a Guatemalan export company, are always on the lookout for new talent. And Héctor Ricardo Leal Pivaral is exactly that. In 2013, Héctor purchased La Laguneta, a 225 acre farm that had been abandoned. He immediately started replanting and within a few years the farm was productive again. Along the way Héctor partnered with San Miguel, which helped La Laguneta with processing protocols. This all translates into precise processing at the farm’s micro-mill, where cherries meticulously selected based on ripeness are depulped, fermented, washed and dried gently on patios before sending the dried parchment to San Miguel. In addition to critical feedback on cup quality, San Miguel also provides crucial logistical support for things like warehousing and milling coffee for export to the international market.
